Entrance to Canaan Loop Road

From Blackwater Falls, you can gain access to Canaan Loop Road. The conditions of the road on the west end (near Blackwater Falls) are very poor. Expect to encounter long fords with rocky entries. Don't attempt the section from Table Rock to Blackwater Falls without a rugged 4X4.

First Ford

Don't worry. If you fail to heed my advice, you will quickly find yourself at this ford where you can conduct your first offroad "gut-check". I have crossed this in a four wheel drive Jeep Cherokee, so it doesn't require some big fancy offroad monster-truck, but I wouldn't try it in a Subaru either.

Canaan Loop Road is perfectly fine for a passenger car from the southern end at WV 32 to the Table Rock Trail. There are a couple rough spots, but as long as you pay attention you won't have any trouble. I actually drove this part today. Heading past Table Rock Trail, the road quickly degenerates. No real gravel left and just a narrow path through the rhododendron. I tried driving it in my car in Fall 2007 and ended up turning back. I'm pretty adventurous with the car but I'm pretty sure I would have gotten stuck or ripped up the underside of the car if I continued.

The loop road is a great little afternoon excursion or camping destination. It's easily accessible by reasonable and prudent drivers using SUV's or small 4x4 pickups. Lower clearance vehicles will probably have to get out and 'scout' where to place their wheels to cross certain obstacles. Don't get lured in by the easy approach to the trail from the main road. The toughest section of the trail is the end closest to the state park.
