Beaver Ponds

Beaver ponds are everywhere at Dolly Sods. The beaver ponds in the pictures below are near Red Creek Campground. There are also beaver ponds along the Breathed Mountain Trail (TR 553), Raven Ridge Trail (unmarked road), and below the Round Hilltop.

Near Red Creek Campground

This one is about 2 miles southwest of Red Creek Campground. It is a few hundred yards off the trail. This area is fairly easy to walk around without getting lost. You can always take out your compass and head due east to intersect with the Forest Service Road.

The Homestead

This beaver dam is at the same location as above. It looks well kept to me, but who knows whether it is occupied. While we were there, we didn't see any beavers. We have seen beavers at other locations in Dolly Sods.

At a campsite near Raven Ridge Trail ,one precocious beaver came out of his lodge while we were sitting and watching one evening. We were about 5 yards from the edge of the pond and we watched him make circles around the pond and then suddenly smack his tail in the water making a loud noise and dive below. He would stay down for a few moments and then come back to the surface. We figured he was irritated at our presence and that was his way to let us know.
