Lion's Head

Lion's Head has one of the most impressive views in Dolly Sods. The entire vista is devoid of human artifice.

you can reach Lions's Head off a side-trail on the Rocky Point Trail. Of course when we went there, we were at first unaware of the trail as we approached from the east and proceeded to bushwack up the rock scree with our packs on (at great expense to our knees and stamina). Be patient and hike around the southern point of the Rocky Point Trail and turn slightly northward where you will find an easy trail head off to the right.

The Lion's Head

The Lion's head is not immediately recognizable when you get to the top of the rocks, but once you see it (pictured at left) you can't miss it. You can also look across Red Creek Valley towards an unnamed view on the other side.

South Towards Laneville

Again, as far as the eye can see, there is nothing but wilderness. In this photo, we are looking a few miles down Red Creek Valley on the left towards Laneville. In the deep ravine to the right runs Big Stonecoal Trail and Little Stonecoal Trail.
