Lion's Head Campsite

Behind Lion's Head

On the hill behind (north) Lion's Head rocks is a flat grassy open area where camping would be easy. I didn't find any water up there, mostly because I didn't expect to find any and I didn't look. There would be some water along Big Stonecoal run which is less than a mile away along Big Stonecoal Trail .

Lion's Head Sheltered Campsite

Also behind Lion's Head rocks is a sheltered, flat campsite sitting under tall pine trees. I think during my next trip to Dolly Sods, I may need to plan to camp here.

Campers Throne on Top of the World

Someone built these awesome chairs around the campfire circle. If there was water closer than 0.5 miles away, this would definitely be the premier campsite at Dolly Sods

The chairs are no longer there.. it looks like they were used to make a massive fireplace instead. The "fire ring" was filled with trash and unfortunately there are obvious signs of people cutting down trees for wood. If you camp here be prepared to have day hikers and other backpackers hike right thru the middle of your site. This is not a site to find solitude during the busy season as hikers will stomp within a few feet of your tent looking for a trail to the Lions Head or wake you from a nap to ask directions. If you go remember to Leave No Trace and protect the wilderness experience.

Having found this sight 4 years ago, I am not crazy about the chairs (admittedly creative) left at the campsite. It takes away from the wilderness feeling most packers are looking for? What next? McDonald's??
