Otter Creek Valley

Otter Creek runs down a beautiful valley among Rhododendron and Laurel bushes. At times, the valley walls run steeply up on both sides of the creek and the rhododendron arches out over the creek to get the last rays of light that filter to the valley floor. The area is densely wooded and only contains a few good campsites, but they are excellent campsites.

Waterfalls

As you walk up the Otter Creek Trail (TR 131) from the Dry Fork of the Cheat River, there are many beautiful little waterfalls like the one pictured, although The first 2 miles after crossing the bridge pictured below is less spectacular. I guess someone was reserving the best views for those of us willing to camp in the wilderness. This picture was taken approximately 5 miles from the bridge. One mile past this location is a fantastic set of campsites with a swimming hole and rope swing.

Stream Crossings

The trail that follows Otter Creek is reasonably flat, although at times it can be fairly rocky or treacherous. There are numerous little springs running across the trail as well as several crossings of Otter Creek itself. Some of the crossings can be dangerous in spring or after heavy rains.

Rhododendron Everywhere

The rhododendron sometimes was well above your head. The areas that go through the dense thickets, are sometimes difficult to traverse because of the rocky footing and the narrow passageways. Rhododendron has an uncanny ability to become entangled in your pack.

Moore Run

At Moore Run there is a complex of pretty waterfalls, and flat rocks. It is a great place for swimming and playing in the water. When the water is high, this area can be treacherous since you need to cross Moore Run.
