Seneca Creek at judy Springs

This picture was taken from the bridge that is still here at Judy Springs. It appears that this was once a semi-improved campground. The area has grassy campsites, plentiful water, and several fire-rings. A group across the stream from us brought a case of beer down to the area (it had to be hiked in about 3.5 miles). When the downpours came, they almost lost their beer as it floated down the river. I guess if you carry a case of beer, along with your tent and food, 3.5 miles, you are bound to get a bit bent out of shape when they are carried downstream.

Approaching the Judy Springs Campground

We approached Judy Springs area from the Horton Trail. It crosses a pretty meadow and then descends down into the trees before opening up into the campground.

Meadow above Judy Springs

The trails in this area seem to frequently bisect meadows on their way down to Seneca Creek. These soft, grassy meadows are gentle on the feet, even while descending steep hills.

Judy Springs isn't a Spring

We collected our water from Judy Springs, expecting it to be pure since it was flowing from what appeared to be a spring in the ground, but later that day, our assumption was proven wrong. When the August, afternoon downpours began, we took shelter under a tarp to watch the rain. Afterward, we headed back up to the spring to find muddy water coming from the spring. If it was indeed a spring, the heavy rains would not have caused it to be muddy. It must be an underground stream instead. At some point upstream, it must come out of the ground.
