Spruce Knob

Hazy Days are Still Beautiful

You can drive to the top of Spruce Knob. The roads leading to the top are generally good quality gravel, although there were a few nice rocky spots during the last half mile to the top. Near the parking lot is a sturdy observation tower. The day we were there was foggy and overcast, but it was still a beautiful view.

View from the Tower

It is impressive to look down on the surrounding mountains that reach 3000' above sea level from the 4,863' of Spruce Knob. There is definitely a feeling of being on top of the world, at least on top of West Virginia.

Don't Miss the Little Things

Along the short walk to the observation tower were boulders strewn about, spruce trees eeking out a tough existence, and beautiful wild flowers. We found several of these little flowers along the trail. Anyone know what it is?

That's almost certainly fireweed (epilobim angustifolium) or one of its cousins. Absolutly stunning when found in large numbers.
