Night on Maryland Heights

There is no deeper blue than the blue of a dusky sky. I came to take night photos of the starry southwest sky over Harpers Ferry, but my favorite panoramic image looked north to the mountainside. The light on the foreground and trees is painted with a big-old flashlight I found in my closet. The thirteen second exposure gave me time to draw the outlines of the treetops and the rocks. Dwelling on the greenish-yellow pine needles against the blue sky could almost make you miss the Great Bear constellation nestled above the trees.

This top image looks towards another panoramic photo I photographed on a Winter day above Maryland Heights.

This second panoramic image looks southwest over the Potomac River on the right and the Shenandoah River on the left. The lines of light on the left side are Route 340 heading towards the lights of Charles Town in the distance. Venus hovers over Harpers Ferry where you can see a line created by a freight train crossing the bridge. The foreground flashlight work isn't as smooth as the one above, but the unevenness does a good job of conveying the disorienting feeling of being out on a moonless night near cliffs with only a narrow path of light to guide you.
