Dolly Sods

Dolly Sods has some of the best backacking within driving distance of Washington, DC. High mountain plains and deep pine forests all can be found within hiking distance. If you intend to backpack at Dolly Sods, I strongly recommend purchasing Monongahela National Forest Hiking Guide: 7th Edition by Allen de Hart and Bruce Sundquist. It is published by the West Virginia Highland Conservancy so the proceeds go to a great cause. Went up Red Creek to Rocky Point, to Big Stonecoal to Blackbird Knob West to Red Creek to Fisher Springs in Oct. Beautiful, but I had forgotten about how steep some of the trails are. We did our whole itenary, but next time I'll allot more time for messing around. The view from Rocky Point and Blackbird Knob was beautiful with the fall colors.
I love Red Creek!

Dolly Sods WIlderness Area now has many visitors and signs of humans are becoming more prevalent. It is important to keep in mind what makes a wilderness experience, a wilderness experience. The ability to experience land unaltered by humanity is a beautiful thing. Leave nothing but footsteps. Also, in the Wilderness Boundary, fires are heavily discouraged unless absolutely necessary. If you enjoy this sacred region, please practice Leave No Trace/Low Impact ethics, and pass on the good knowledge.

Howdy. Spent a weekend around big stonecoal and Breathed Mountain trails area. Camped down at the Red Creek forks. WAter was bitchin cold! Had some trouble finding Lion's head, but when we finally got there the view was worth the cuts and scrapes to get up some of the rocks. Did some bouldering around there. tons of nooks and crannies to explore. Stopped at the waterfall along big stonecoal and cooled my head in the water. Again the thing about the cold...water on the sods is always bitchin cold. Saw some of the illusive mountain pixies while sitting around the fire. They seemed to be circling the fire watching us.
